Dan Linden Sensei & Mitsugi Saotome Shihan at the Aiki Shrine Dojo in Myakka City, Florida

Mitsugi Saotome Shihan

Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) was founded over twenty years ago by Mitsugi Saotome Shihan, a direct student for fifteen years of Aikido's founder O-Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. Today, more than two thousand students train in over 100 dojos of this international federation, which is affiliated with Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Tokyo, Japan.

Saotome Sensei is dedicated to the teaching and educating of Aikido instructors. He has built a teachers college in Myakka City near Sarasota, Florida, for the sole purpose of training Master Instructors -- the only such place in existence.

"I want to develop an Aikido University where senior students can come study for various periods of time. I want them to study, share and learn from each other about things like leadership, management, and teaching. Just because someone has been in a senior rank for many years does not mean s/he knows about leadership, managing a dojo, or teaching. I don't want the focus to be on learning or even refining techniques. Techniques are what advanced students know and teach. There are larger things to discuss and learn, things like: the future of Aikido, building a better society by building better individuals, leadership, and many other things. Things that are the basis for being a Shihan." *

"The Aikido University will be a place where students can practice and learn and discuss what is the meaning of peace and harmony and how Aikido can contribute to create those qualities in our country and the world -- O Sensei's dream." *

* Mitsugi Saotome Sensei, both quotes from ASU Newsletter, August 2000
